T-shaped Individual
The point of this exercise was to show that no matter what aspect of design you specialise in you can take inspiration from any discipline of design. I was asked to scour the internet to collect a hoard of images of pieces of design that influence me. The horizontal section is images of other disciplines and the vertical section is filled with images from my own discipline, product design.
Vertical (My Discipline)
The checked Vans (bottom right) are my favourite pair of shoes, I wear my pair at least 5 out of the 7 days in the week. They are a very simplistic but effective design and I really admire the use of contrast of both shape and tone.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch in rose gold (top left). I absolutely love the hexagonal bevel around the face and the rugged styling and fluid design.
I have always been a fan of Jonathon Ive as he has designed so many gorgeous products and the iPhone X is no exception (top right). The seamless design creates a premium looking phone and the materials used make the phone feel luxurious and classy.
Les Paul by Gibson (bottom left). This guitar will always go down what I feel is the best looking guitar ever designed. Its beauty is in its simplicity. The smooth curves create a deluxe looking design and everyone knows about Gibson’s high end quality guitars.
Horizontal (Other Disciplines)
I think that Banksy’s work is really powerful and it always sends such a stromg political message (top left). I have actually seen this piece in person and i used it as inspiration when I was designing an album cover for my advanced higher graphics folio.
The Scottish Parliament building (bottom left). This was the first time i’d ever really noticed design, I remember being fascinated that someone would have sat and imagined what they wanted the building to look like and then they would have turned that image into reality. I guess I could say that this building is the reason I decided to go into design in the first place.
Scarface is one of my favourite movies of all time and this movie poster (top right) definitely does it justice. The use of contrast is really compelling and intrigues the reader. Brian de Palma uses really strong lighting in the movie so this is emulated through the poster.
Fashion also has such a huge influence me because when something isn’t fashionable, people aren’t going to want it. Fashion isn’t just clothes it’s what we surround ourselves by, its a way of life. ‘Tyler the Creator’ (bottom right) is a rap artist stroke fashion designer who likes to test the boundaries and see how far he can go before his ideas snap and I really admire that about him.
Music and music culture also have a really big impact on my life and I would probably say I take the majority of my influence from music. Music is the one thing that ties to every single aspect of design be it fashion or product everyone can take influence from music.
