Two weeks ago I visited Jupiter Artland with the Visual Research Methods module on my course. Jupiter Artland is a modern and contemporary art gallery/sculpture park around 20 minutes west of Edinburgh’s city centre.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by a set of magnificent gates that invited me into the grounds of the park and I was immediately immersed in the beauty and elegance of the place.

THE LIGHT POURS OUT OF ME — Anya Gallaccio

I took a sharp left onto a thin dirt track that led me through the woodland where I stumbled across a vast cubic hole in the earth filled with purple amethyst crystals that glistened in the light. From the outside I felt wary as the path into the chasm was rather daunting however once you reached the bottom the space was enchanting, solemn and intimate. I was amazed with the way the light reacted with the crystals and the sharp edges and the different tones and shadows they created.

As I wondered through the woodland I left no stone unturned as i wanted to make sure i made the most of my experience at this amazing place. I found myself heading towards a clearing and as i approached all i could see was a big green mound so I ventured up to the top of the mound and as soon as I could see over the top I was stunned by what was before me.

CELLS OF LIFE — Charles Jencks

This piece was very striking to me mainly due to the sheer size of it and the vast open landscape that surrounds it created a contrast to the cluttered, messy woodland from which I had just emerged. Jencks aimed to mirror mitosis, which is when one cell splits into two. The vast scale really made me think about every tiny little detail that makes me.. me. CELLS OF LIFE helped me realise that the human body is such a complex and amazing phenomenon that should never be taken for granted.
